Hi, I'm Matt, a coach based in London
I work with people to understand what's really behind how they think and feel, and what that means for the way they lead and relate at work.
In my happy place by the sea
I started out as a fairly typical coach, identifying goals and helping people working towards them. Whilst that coaching has its place, and I saw it work, I kept getting frustrated with it. People would bring something real, a pattern of behaviour or a relationship that just was not working, and the approach I was using just didn't have the tools to go there with them. The work felt surface level and I'd still feel like we'd missed something.
So I started training at the Tavistock Institute, which is where I'm now completing a psychodynamic and systems-based executive coaching qualification. It's shifted how I work quite fundamentally. I'm less focused on getting to action quickly, more interested in spending time getting to what's actually going on. The patterns, the dynamics, the stuff that doesn't always show up in a goal-setting conversation but shapes everything.
It's a different kind of coaching. Slower and deeper, but in my experience, that's where things actually shift.
I am so fascinated by people. I love the moment someone feels properly heard and you can see something shift. I love the conversations that go somewhere unexpected and where someone comes in thinking they need to solve a problem and leaves having understood something about themselves they hadn't quite put into words before.
I've spent over 20 years as a people leader across different organisations, so I understand from the inside what it's like to carry responsibility for others while still figuring yourself out. I've also spent years leading delivery and operations in complex organisations, operating at senior level myself, so I know what it's like to be accountable and trying to hold things together at the same time. For the past few years I've volunteered with a wonderful organisation called The Listening Place, supporting people through some of the hardest moments of their lives. That work gave me a real sense of privilege when someone trusts you with the difficult stuff, something I carry into every coaching relationship.
Care matters to me, but so does honesty. The most meaningful work happens when someone feels safe enough to go deep and I can still ask the question that nudges them somewhere potentially uncomfortable.
I've worked with people at various stages of their careers, whether they're early on and figuring things out, mid-career and feeling stuck, or experienced leaders carrying a lot of responsibility and not many places to take it. They've come from charities, public sector organisations, and corporate environments.
What tends to connect them is less about sector or seniority and more about a willingness to look at themselves honestly. The people I work with are curious about themselves. They are open to sitting with uncomfortable questions, and interested in understanding not just what they do but why. If you're commissioning coaching for someone in your organisation, I'm happy to talk through what that might look like and whether I'm the right fit.
We start with an informal chat with no agenda or obligation. It's a chance to talk about what's going on for you and whether coaching feels like the right thing. Just as importantly, it's a chance to see whether we're a good fit. That matters to me.
If we decide to work together, we'll spend some time getting clear on what you want from coaching. That might be something specific, or it might be more of a felt sense that something needs to shift. Both are fine starting points.
Sessions are 90 minutes, either in person in London or online. That time allows us to get properly into things. We generally have space between sessions to allow for reflection so they're normally every 3-4 weeks.
A lot of the work happens in the gaps. Noticing patterns, sitting with what came up, paying attention to how things land in real situations. I'll often invite you to stay curious between sessions.
The beach and Dolly - two of my favourite things
I'm based in south-east London and I'm a keen runner and proud owner of a rescue greyhound. Both are things I picked up during the pandemic, and both turned out to be pretty important for my mental health.
I've come to understand myself better over the years, including identifying as queer and non-binary, which took me a while to find the language for. I mention it not because it defines how I show up, but because I think it's worth knowing there's a real person on the other side of this, with their own story of figuring things out. That feels relevant when you're thinking about who to trust with yours.
You take an empowering coaching approach which is both nurturing and challenging. You have helped me to feel more sure and confident in myself, not by changing what I do necessarily, but more helping me to re-frame and understand my own experiences.
I like the way you worked with me to take a step back and see the bigger picture. You listened to my unstructured brain dump, helped me figure out what was going on and encouraged me to look at situations from a different perspective.
Your ability to make me feel heard played such a big role in supporting me through many difficult times. I can't thank you enough for being present and supportive during a period of significant change for me and the team I lead.
